NEDA Fall Festival 9/20/14

10/01/14

Ok going to try to do daily riding posts again…anyway two rides today: western practice & hunt seat lesson.

In western practice I rode this mare Edee who is generally not very good western (I rode her for my evaluation which was a shit show), but at the jog she was very slow and relaxed, even stretching down nicely. However, she put up a fight when it came time to pick up the lope and would like kick the wall…which brings us to our next part of the story. Edee is a pretty mean kicker and I was loping her around on the inside and she managed to kick a horse on the rail even though we were well away from him…I feel kind of horrible even though I know it’s not my fault. It’s sad because he’s like our best western horse and now he’s on stall rest for a month. :( Edee has been banned from group lessons now.

In my hunt seat lesson I rode this cute lil guy named Charles. Normally I really like him and he’s really easy going but today I noticed he was really grumpy in his stall and then super girthy which he normally is not….then after I got on, he was really crooked and stiff and he was bobbing his head a lot at the trot. Apparently they think he might have lyme :( Anyway I ended up jumping some nice courses on him, and I got some pretty nice spots. I just really need to work on being less stiff with my upper body and not standing up in my stirrups (hard on him because he’s so small). My instructor had me do this exercise where she puts the reins under their neck and you have to hold them from there. It’s basically supposed to make it so you can’t put your hands in your lap and she said it would make me “comfier” … idk i just felt like it tipped me really far forward.

Overall though, two pretty dece rides compared with how things have been lately.

I love this horse’s expression
NEDA Fall Festival 9/20/14

can i just say that i have a pet peeve with pictures like this, and never understood why they get so many reblogs and likes? i love Udon and Kelly personally, they are one of my favorite pairs. BUT this isn’t a good shot in time of the horse’s gait, as the photographer should have taken the picture seconds later, when the horse’s legs are in the extended position, NOT just before, like in this picture, where the legs are kinda awkward and lagging. it just bugs the crap out of me when people are like, ohhhh ahhh, look how nice and i’m looking at a picture like this thinking, ohhh ahhh, look how terrible the photographer’s timing is!!!!!!!

Literally why did you feel the need to leave such a nasty comment on my photo? You could have just not reblogged. Also, I never claimed that I was a good photographer….I’ve had my camera for literally less than a month and this shot is from my first time shooting horses ever. Idk maybe just keep your nasty comments to yourself.

And might I just add that photography is not only about making conventional shots where it’s all pretty and everything. I don’t think photography should be limited in any way by strict subjective standards.
Personally I like the photo!

I agree! I looked back in my photos and I do have a shot of this pair in the trot at the moment she was talking about, but I liked (and still like) this one better because of the composition and the horse’s expression.

I totally get that! Btw what’s your camera, because it seems to give nice action shots?

I actually just have a Canon rebel t5 so a pretty basic starter camera but it’s been working well for me so far!

Anonymous asked: I cannot afford to buy and ship you boots personally, which is why I do not run a lesson program. I work full time at below minimum wage to support my one horse and it's a stretch to make ends meet even then, because I live in a very expensive part of the country. If you put up a donation link I will donate what I am able now, which is $10-$15. I know you think I'm an ass, but I actually really do only kvetch because I care and DO want people to ride and have fun and be safe around horses.

1. I don’t think you’re an ass, I think you were very quick to condemn a situation you aren’t part of and probably have no experience in. Do you also think vaulters need to wear boots, would you consider their footwear less than adequate? I’m certainly not saying crocs are a good choice but they aren’t worth turning the child away. It’s odd crocs were the complaint, I’ve posted a fair amount of riders in sneakers…. what’s the difference there?

2. You’re first sentence confuses me, are you implying that I shouldn’t have a lesson program if I can’t afford to personally purchase boots for all my riders? I don’t know of any barn or person that does that.

3. I didn’t ask you, or anyone else to buy boots, I asked for USED and/or outgrown boots.

4. Donations links have caused me a lot of unfriendly grief, as much as I’d like to collect donations for things like that… I can’t, it’s too general a request BUT I would consider opening donations to sponsor a rider maybe? I’m not sure.

5. My only goal is to make horses accessible, I have to take calculated risks in order to do that and allowing crocs during the first few lessons is one of those things.

This whole thing is kind of funny to me because I’ve literally watched at least two famous riders in Iceland hop on horses in crocs when they didn’t know they’d be riding and didn’t come prepared. It’s not the BEST footwear but by no means the end of the world.. I’ve actually been stepped on while doing barn chores in my crocs and you know, they’re surprisingly tough - I didn’t even get bruised toes. Not that I’m recommending that everyone go get stepped on in crocs but I think had I been wearing sneakers instead of shoes made out of thick, ridged foam, my toes would have been in more danger. Besides, lots of kids go to their first few riding lessons in less-than-ideal footwear. I can tell you that, for my first riding lessons (at Fieldstone Show Park), I wore STEVE MADDEN BOOTS. Yes, with the big chunky sole. And denim overalls (It was the ’90s, people!!), man was I one stylish little 9-year-old. After a few lessons when it was clear that I wasn’t going to quit this activity the way I had almost immediately lost interest in soccer and ballet, my parents invested in paddock boots, jods, and a helmet for me - but I can’t blame them for waiting to see if this interest would stick before shelling out a couple hundred bucks on riding clothes and shoes that I would outgrow a few months later. I’m sure the kids will come to their next lesson with better footwear now that you’ve spoken to them but I’m with you on this one, one ride in crocs is not the end of the world and it’s not a reason to turn the kids away..

My parents did the same - they didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment for a sport I might not like, so they waited a few lessons. My first lesson was in big awkward rain boots, leggings (because my mom rode when she was a kid and figured they’d be the closest thing I owned to breeches), and a way-too-big t-shirt that I insisted on wearing because it was my only one with horses on it. imageAnd then a couple weeks later..image

thecityhorse, show this to your croc haters!!

Here’s an after picture of me in my own helmet a few months after the first pic I posted - I’m wearing my jods and paddock boots in this photo too, but they don’t show in this pic. And how ‘bout that fleece jacket? *STYLE*

The horse was named Barney, I looooved him… my first love <3

I ride in the IHSA (western), and we are always looking for new beginners to ride on our team. However, many of the people we get have never been on a horse before (but how brave is that to get on a horse for the first time at a tryout at the age of 20!!!) and so we get some very interesting outfits. We frequently have beginners riding in skinny jeans or leggings with big clunky rain boots and a borrowed helmet. It just doesn’t make any sense for people to go out and buy hundreds of dollars of gear for an activity they have no idea if they’ll like.

I myself rode western in my paddock boots for almost a year before I invested in real “western” boots. I don’t know, I think it is ridiculous that thecityhorse is getting hate for giving kids the opportunity to find out if they like riding before shelling out a lot of money.

i wasn’t personally attacking you because as i was saying, theres a ton of photographers, most of them professional photographers, that post and advertise pictures just like this! clearly i’m in the minority as a ton of equestrians love pictures like this, proven by all the likes of facebook, reblogs on tumblr, etc. i’m just expressing my displeasure with this type of shot in the movement before the horse extends their legs. i’m allowed to express my opinion and i thought this picture popping up on my dash was a perfect example of this and i wanted to say anything about it (especially since i LOVE this horse, i know he has gorgeous paces but this moment in time shot of his trot is not flattering to his expression, in MY opinion). Sorry that I offended you, I just don’t like any picture like this.

Ok well it doesn’t feel impersonal when you tag my photo as “horrible.” In the future please do not start “general” debates like this on specific tumblr users’ photos, perhaps just make a text post complaining about it, so that it is not specifically targeting any one person. Putting comments like that on people’s photos is a surefire way to offend them, even if you don’t mean to.
